BASICS TO GET STARTED
PAINTING FOR PLEASURE
1. BRING WHAT YOU HAVE
Once you start painting you will discover new colors that you like & new ideas, so do not go out and buy what you think you might need, until you start. This is a basic list that will get you started and yes, later, you will add a whole lot of new colors to your kit & widen your horizons. We do not want you to go out buy colors and supplies that you do not need.
2. INSPIRATIONS
What am going to paint.? Whatever you like, and if you ever get stuck for ideas we have a great resource library to inspire you. Yes, PAINTING FOR PLEASURE comes from your heart
So bring your own pictures, photos, ideas, dreams of special things that you want to paint. Keep your eyes open all the time for ideas.
You can paint just for your own pleasure or for your home from small paintings to extra large decor & statement paintings - easy !

3. WATERCOLORS
You can buy cheap sets for your first paintings -as a starter they are OK - but once you get serious these colors will disappoint.
BUY PROFESSIONAL ARTIST QUALITY COLORS -[ do not buy student colors]
ARTIST QUALITY BRANDS INCLUDE: Art Spectrum , Windsor & Newton, Lukas, Aquarelle by Schmincke
COLORS : CRIMSON [ ALIZARIN]
YELLOW OCHRE
INDIAN YELLOW
RED [ spectrum or cadmium]
ULTRAMARINE BLUE
INDIGO BLUE
BURNT SIENNA
PAPERS : Please aim for a good quality paper - there are papers that advertise that they are watercolor papers but they are often expensive / cheap and are very very disappointing to use.
look for the grammage [weight] of the paper - the heavier the better - 300gsm or 350gsm give good results
CP [cold pressed or NOT] medium rough A3 is preferred size [ but A4 is ok to start]
Later the ultimate paper is French called ARCHES & is excellent for excellent paintings
BRUSHES : to start you need 1 x large soft for washes etc 1 x medium soft & 1 x very small soft [once you get started you will buy more] Brushes vary amazingly in quality & price - to start with synthetic brushes are OK Sometimes you can buy a set - but the very cheap ones are usually not very good
EXTRAS : Quality masking tape 25mm
Palette - white plastic - with compartments
4b or 2b pencil & sketch pad or even photo-copy paper
Soft absorbent kitchen paper towels
Board to tape your paper to

ACRYLICS : There are some good buys in Acrylics.[ and a cheap set could get you started - but not good for your best paintings]
Brands: Mont Marte are cheap and good to start with
Jo Sonja are also good to start with then AS-art spectrum

COLORS: Ultramarine Blue Yellow Ochre Orange/yellow Crimson Scarlet
White[x2] Pale Blue Burnt Sienna Burnt Umber Cobalt Indigo
CANVAS ; Best for painting on - you can get these in a large choice of sizes at local $2 shops & the like at very good prices
BRUSHES: I x large 1 x medium 1 x very small synthetic brushes are very good you may also pick up some cheap
bristle brushes. I prefer flat brushes 7 others prefer round brushes - the choice is yours
EXTRAS : Keep & recycle plastic meat trays & when the paint dries throw them out

spray bottle to put water in for a fine spray

OILS If this is your first time you can buy cheap sets of colors to start and then go for the artist quality as you progress
BRANDS : professional artists quality - they vary in prices - wait for the sales !

COLORS: These ones will get you going & then you can get others as your paintings demand
Titanium white - a large tube
Crimson [alizarin]
Yellow Ochre + Naples Yellow + Indian Yellow
Red [ spectrum or cadmium]
Ultramarine Blue + Tasman + Indigo + [ later + Phthalo + Torquise if you are painting water]
Burnt Sienna Burnt Umber
BRUSHES: buy a cheap set of bristle brushes - flat or round
synthetic soft brushes [ i prefer flat 1 x large [size 10 +] 1 x medium [size 6+] 1x small [size 2] 1 x very small fine tip for delicate & fine work]
CANVAS: a wide variety of sizes for you to choose from are available at $2 type shops at good prices
MEDIUM ; Important to get a bottle of lean medium or No 1 medium
PALETTE: Paper palette pad are great
EXTRAS Odorless solvent [ or turps if you are allergic - much cheaper- or citrus turps - smells better !]
Small old jam jars for you solvent & medium. & a few old jam jar lids
Palette knife [ sometimes you can buy a set for a few dollars]
Old rags & an old towel

PASTELS Best to buy a set of pastels with many colors - look for artist quality [ not student]
Pastel Paper - the heavier the better and with a tooth or "rough"surface. often you buy the paper in a pad.
